What is it and how do you obtain Italian citizenship by descent?

Italian citizenship by descent – iure sanguinis – was introduced with law no. 555 of 13 June 1912.

The ius sanguinis provides for the attribution of citizenship based on the principle of descent. The parent transmits citizenship to the child, regardless of the place where the birth took place. Italian citizenship by descent is granted without any generation limit for the person who claims it.

The procedure for the recognition of Italian citizenship by descent can be started:

- at the competent Italian consulate of the foreign country where the descendant has residence;

- in the Italian municipality where the descendant citizen has established his residence.

Citizenship by descent from a mother born before 1948 is obtained through a judicial request for recognition to be presented before the competent Court of Rome.
